Life’s a Beach!
If you ask us… Hong Kong’s beaches don’t get enough attention. It might be famous for having the most skyscrapers of any city in the world, and people tend to think ‘concrete jungle’ when they picture Hong Kong, but the beaches here are just as mesmerising. With Hong Kong’s summer back in full swing (not that it leaves us for too long!), now’s the time to escape city life. Let the waves hit your feet and the sand be your seat!
Ham Tin Beach – Sai Kung, New Territories
One of our all time favourites. For the fitness freaks, hike over from Sai Wan Pavilion and stop off for some cliff jumping at the picturesque waterfall. For those looking for a more chilled route there’s a speedboat that takes you straight to the beach from Sai Kung Pier. Once on the beach, balance your way over the old rickety bridge for a spot of lunch or some sundowners before jumping back on the boat for a bumpy but beautiful journey back. Or, if you’re not quite ready to leave paradise, set up camp for the night with rental equipment available to hire.
Big Wave Bay – Shek O, Hong Kong Island
The name says it all… BIG WAVES (calling all surfers)! If you’re not one for surfing then it’s a great place to grab a bite to eat after hiking Dragon’s Back. Sit back and sip on something sweet whilst you admire the views/surfers. Wander down to the water to take a look at the famous rock carvings (now a recognised HK monument).
Turtle Cove – Stanley, Hong Kong Island
Don’t let the size of this beach put you off. It might be small but that gives it that added exclusivity. Take along a picnic and make use of the barbecue facilities. Be sure to come prepared with all the food and drinks you need as there are no shops or stalls around this beach.
Lower Cheung Sha Beach – Lantau Island
This quiet beach makes for a perfect day out. You can escape the city chaos and enjoy a breezy beachside lunch or dinner at the beach club restaurant Bathers. Pack your swimmers and go from beach to bar. A great spot for sundowners whilst watching the beautiful sunset.
Sai Wan Beach – Sai Kung, New Territories
This beach is just by the waterfall mentioned earlier on the hike to Ham Tin beach, so if you fancy some saltwater and freshwater all in one then this is a fab location. With two hills covering either side of the beach its nice and tucked away from any unwanted noise (apart from the waves which we can handle!).
Shek O – Hong Kong Island
One of Hong Kong’s most well-known beaches. Shek O is definitely a crowd pleaser, but if it is peace and quiet you’re after, we would probably steer clear. Although this beach is dog-friendly which makes it a massive winner for us!
